Choosing the right media server tier¶
TL;DR
Help a tenant choose the best bundle by asking whether they want a Stremio addon experience, a personal media server, or both. Use their budget, quality needs, and expected device usage to match them with Hobbit, Halfling, Ranger, or Nazgul.
Steps¶
- Ask what they want to do. The answer determines the bundle category:
- Stremio addons for quick access to streaming add-ons and curated content.
- Media server bundles for personal libraries, Plex/Emby/Jellyfin playback, and local streaming.
- Both if they want a hybrid setup with direct library access plus addon content.
- Confirm their delivery tier needs. Use these general guidelines:
- Hobbit — entry-level, best for light use and 720p/1080p directplay; not ideal for heavy transcoding or many simultaneous streams.
- Halfling — moderate use, usually fine for 1080p playback and smaller libraries.
- Ranger — higher bandwidth and more headroom; good for mixed directplay and occasional transcoding.
- Nazgul — premium performance, best for 4K workflows and heavier transcoding.
- Ask about directplay vs transcoding. If the tenant wants playback without transcoding, recommend a higher tier and a capable media server. If they expect automatic format conversion, make sure the bundle supports transcoding and enough CPU/bandwidth.
- Compare product types:
- Debrid bundles are generally better for addon-style streaming and hoster integration.
- Non-Debrid bundles are simpler and may be better if the tenant wants only a personal media server.
- Debridge bundles are for tenants who want a more managed bridge between sources and playback, especially when they need the convenience of curated content.
- Explain debrid vs usenet:
- Debrid is for easy access to hoster-based streaming/downloading.
- Usenet is a different source model that is often better for archive-style content and can be more reliable for some kinds of media.
- Explain proxies and bandwidth:
- Use proxies when needed to avoid multi‑IP bans from usenet providers or some debrid providers.
- For Stremio addons, proxies can be boosted with a Booster (see staff guide for exact SKUs and pricing).
- For media server bundles (Plex/Emby/Jellyfin), bandwidth is tied to the bundle tier; to get more sustained bandwidth you must upgrade the Hobbit/Halfling/Ranger/ Nazgul bundle.
Note: If this looks like a good fit for a paid session (VIP/Wizard), suggest it to
the tenant and ask them to open a VIP ticket in #elf-help. Vengers: verify the
purchase via Elrond before starting work (confirm order number and that it hasn't
been consumed).
Bandwidth & proxies (details)¶
This section gives concrete guidance on bandwidth expectations, proxy usage, and when to recommend a Booster vs a bundle upgrade.
- Proxies for Stremio addons:
- Proxies start at 128 Mbps and can be boosted via Booster subscriptions up to higher tiers (some Booster SKUs go as high as 1 Gbps). Boosters are primarily used to avoid multi‑IP bans with debrid providers like Real‑Debrid and AllDebrid, or for usenet streaming. Proxies are generally not needed for providers such as Premiumize or TorBox.

-
Media server bundle bandwidth caps (approx):
- Hobbit: 256 Mbps — entry-level, suitable for light use and a few simultaneous directplay streams.
- Halfling: 1 Gbps — moderate use; suitable for multiple 1080p streams and small libraries.
- Ranger: 512 Mbps — higher bandwidth and headroom for mixed directplay and some transcoding workloads.
- Nazgul: 1 Gbps — premium performance for 4K workflows and heavier transcoding.
Note: These are operator guidance numbers. If tenants need more precise bandwidth
guarantees, escalate to bsm or reference the official product pages.
- When to recommend which option:
- If the tenant primarily needs addon streaming and is hitting rate limits or IP bans, recommend a Booster (proxy) first.
- If the tenant needs sustained high bandwidth for a personal media server (many simultaneous streams or heavy transcoding), recommend upgrading the bundle tier.
-
Boosters affect Stremio/proxy throughput only; media server bundles cannot be boosted with a Booster and require a tier upgrade for more bandwidth.
-
Troubleshooting checks:
- Ask whether the issue is per‑user or platform‑wide; IP bans often surface as many tenants reporting similar failures from the same debrid provider.
- Check proxy/booster usage and whether the tenant is on a proxy SKU that supports their expected throughput.
- If in doubt, escalate to bsm for billing/product questions or to confirm SKU limits.
- Recommend the right combination:
- For a tenant who wants quick addon access: recommend Stremio addons + Debrid.
- For a tenant who wants a home media server with low-latency playback: recommend a higher-tier media server bundle (Ranger/Nazgul) and check if their client needs directplay.
- For VIP/white-glove setup: propose a custom walkthrough with Elf-Assessment and possible package upgrades.
Verify it worked¶
- The tenant understands which bundle supports their goals.
- You have a clear recommendation: Stremio addon, media server tier, or hybrid setup.
- If they are still unsure, offer to escalate to bsm for detailed billing/product guidance.
Gotchas / watch out for¶
- Don't oversell 4K on a low-tier bundle. If they ask about 4K, the safe answer is usually Ranger or Nazgul.
- Debrid and usenet are not interchangeable. Ask what kind of content they want first.
- Proxies are not always needed. Only recommend one if the tenant has a geo or access problem.
- White-glove VIP setups may need a custom configuration and should be coordinated with funkypenguin or bsm.
